It is just to heavy and requires undue consideration on every shot for everything to go as planned. The only thing that really still needs work is the trigger. I have shot 13 raccoons and 6 Porcupines with the rifle barrel in the last two weeks, all chest shots, and the results were impressive. All rabbits and squirrels not batted with the shotgun barrel were headshots and appeared about as damaging as a. I used the shotgun barrel nearly as much as the rifle barrel and the combo was just deadly. I have had a ball with this gun ever since and finished the small game season with her. Since I have settled on this load I haven't cleaned the rifle barrel in 380 rounds and yesterday I shot a 100yd group of 1.153in prone(3 shots). And best of all this load lands just above the middle of the pattern at 40 yds when the rifle barrel is zeroed at 75 yds. This load burns a little dirty but averages 1206 FPS with an ES of 8 FPS. RCBS HEAVY roll crimp in separate step(Lee FC or Redding Profile would size down boolits) I won't bore you further with load development but tell you where I found happiness. I decided to start off slow in keeping with my idea of this being a small game combination gun and very quickly the clouds parted and the stars aligned. First off I dug out my Beagled Lyman 358430 I had doctored for the 38 S&W. 357 Mag rifles I ordered some 360 Dan Wesson brass from Starline. 361 sizer came in and following the lead of others on this forum in dealing with long chambered.

The loads that were even near satisfactory accuracy-wise weren't cast, were full throttle small game destroyers and were landing above the pattern of the shotgun barrel. Nothing seemed to be going my way so far with this gun. The first three shots would be in a radially dispersed group and shots four and five would would walk further and further down. 357Mag/20ga, strung vertically as the barrel(s) heated up. ALL loads, as jhrosier had observed with his 24V. The problems were no joy with any cast loadings as my. Of all the 357 mag loadings I assembled the best shot just over 2 inches 50 yds(180gr XTP/15.6gr Lil'Gun/ 1.710in OAL ). Federal Gold Medal 38SPL wad cutters shot 4 inch groups right off the bat. Range results were consistently disappointing. And it did, no more misfires and the trigger pull dropped down to 7.5lbs. I had no home remedy for the off center bit but I thought that with the amazing amount of potential energy built up just cocking the hammer that perhaps a cleaning and lubricating of the clockwork would help. Wonderfully crisp 13# trigger with no creep or over-travel.įirst on my list was the weak and off center firing pin strikes as they were causing misfires with harder primers. Barrels while horizontally in coincidence were not so vertically( rifle barrel struck above the pattern 40yds). Let me list her original ails, off center(and weak) firing pin strikes in both barrels. It holds such a promise of utility and joy spent afield. First off I can see why the guy before me sold this thing and also why it took him nearly 40 years to part with it.

I thought I would give an update of my progress with this arm for those who may be interested. Hopefully it will prove to be a very useable addition to my collection. I have yet to mount a scope on it as I don't want to have to treat it like a scoped gun. The pretty color case hardened finish on the 24V is far more pleasing than the piss-poor unfinished then blued finish on the 24F and the damn crossbolt crap has already caused some grief. The 24F is much heavier than the 24V, the stock is both ugly and not nearly as comfortable as the 24V and the machine work/ finish? is down right terrible.
I also liked the fact that I didn't have to worry about the plastic stock since I didn't want to beat up the fancy stock on the 24V so we traded with the agreement that we could always trade back. 357 and the 12 bore can go from light to INSANE levels and the screw in choke should prove to be an asset.

I thought, hmm, I plan on this being my camping/survival gun and though it doesn't share the same ammo as my favorite handgun (.357), I can up and download a 30-30 a good bit more than a. I say "it would" because after I showed it to a buddy he offered to trade me his same as new 24F 30-30/12 ga. It would squeeze a good bit more speed out of my 175 grain cast loads using WC-820 compared to my 16" Rossi '92, does that stuff ever fully burn up? It shot well and didn't handle too badly for what it was. It was in decent shape, very tight but had been around the block, some pitting here and there and a little stock wear. at a pawn shop and I got it for $300.00 out the door.
